Artwork Story: The figure of King David fascinated the artists and he sculptured him at different phases of his work and each time using a different artistic style. In one version, David is a humble young man, playing the harp to King Saul; in another, David with the Sling, he is fighting Goliath; and the third version, of this sculpture, hints at the great future ahead of him. In this artwork, David’s body faces sideway rather than to the front, as in David Playing the Harp. This indicates that he is already aware of the power and of his possible destiny to be king. His head is held high rather than turned toward the harp, demonstrating the confidence that experienced musicians have. While his posture is twisted, he seems to be lifting himself up, rising toward his new life.
