Artwork Story: Life away from Earth, the moon landing, the pieces of moon rock that the astronauts brought back with them, ignited the artist’s imagination and he embarked on a new style, in conversation with space science. In the 70’s, the artist exhibited some of his space-themed sculptures in art exhibitions focused on sculpturing in unconventional materials. The Space Family is an artwork depicting the mother and father figures hosting their children inside them. The base of the sculpture is a metal cast, similar in structure to the rocky land of the moon. The figures themselves may be seen as a spacecraft or a family. The sculpture is made of aluminum cast and is therefore different from all the artist’s bronze sculptures in the gallery. The shining silver color produces reflections, thereby making the heavy sculpture seem ethereal. Space Family is an artwork inspired not by biblical stories, dancer or birds, yet it deals with family relationship, love and unity. For the artist, the inherent power of the family unit is independent of location, era and even space. It is universal and eternal.
